In accordance
with the Municipal Elections Act 1996, as amended, the next
Municipal Election will be held Monday, October 25, 2010.
Under the Act, the City
Clerk is responsible for conducting the elections in the City of
Pickering for the offices of Mayor, Regional Councillors and City
Councillors. Additionally, the City Clerk is responsible for certain
aspects of the elections of members of school boards, as set out in
the Education Act and associated regulations.
The Clerk's
Office conducts the Election including compiling and finalizing
the voters list, providing public notification of the election
process, establishing voting locations, recruiting and training
election officials, and tabulating and publishing the election results.
This web page is intended to communicate relevant
information pertaining to the 2010 Municipal Elections. As dates,
processes and other details are finalized, this page will be updated
accordingly.
Nominations
will be accepted the first business day after January 1, 2010 which
will be January 4, 2010. The last day to file Nominations is
Friday, September 10, 2010 by 2:00 pm.
Find out if you are on the Voters' List
If you qualify and your name has been omitted
from the Voters’ List or the information is incorrectly shown, you
must file an application for revision during the period starting
Tuesday, September 7, 2010, to Monday, October 25, 2010 (election
day).
Applications are available in the
Clerk’s Office, Pickering Civic Complex, One The Esplanade and may
be filed during normal office hours, Monday to Friday.
Identification will be required. Applications may also be made on
October 25, 2010 (election day) at the elector’s voting location.

Available Positions

Ballot
Tabulation Officer (BTO)
–
The
person responsible for the operation of the vote counting equipment
and the safekeeping of the marked ballots and election results.
The BTO wage for Election Day will be
$200.00 (must be able to lift 25 pounds).
·
Deputy
Returning Officer (DRO)
–
The
person responsible for ensuring that all eligible voters who wish to
vote get the opportunity to do so.
The DRO hands out the ballots,
instructs voters on how to vote and issues oral Oath of
Qualification when required.
The DRO wage for Election Day will be $200.00
(must be able to lift 25 pounds).

Poll Clerk –
The person hired to assist the Deputy Returning Officer.
The Poll Clerk wage for Election Day
will be $175.00.

Elector Qualifications - Who can vote?
Qualifications of Electors
(2) A person
is entitled to be an elector at an election held in a local
municipality if, on voting day, he or she,
(a) resides in
the local municipality or is the owner or tenant of land there, or
the spouse of such owner or tenant;
(b) is a Canadian
citizen;
(c) is at least
18 years old; and
(d) is not
prohibited from voting under subsection (3) or otherwise by law.

Persons prohibited from voting
(3) The
following are prohibited from voting:
1. A person who
is serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional
institution.
2. A corporation.
3. A person
acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative
capacity, except as a voting proxy in accordance with section 44.
4. A person who
was convicted of the corrupt practice described in subsection 90
(3), if voting day in the current election is less than five years
after voting day in the election in respect of which he or she was
convicted. 1996, c. 32, Sched., s. 17 (3); 2006, c. 9, Sched. H,
s. 4.

Why should I vote?
Your vote makes a difference! By voting for a Mayor and Councillors,
you are helping set the future direction of your community. The City
provides the day-to-day services you count on - from Fire and Police, to clean water,
roads, and garbage collection, to parks, recreation facilities and public libraries
(to name a few).
City Council decides how your property tax dollars are spent and
establishes the level and range of municipal services available in
your community. That's why your vote makes a difference!
What do I do if my name
isn't on the Voters List?
The Municipal Property Assessment
Corporation (MPAC) is responsible for supplying the City of
Pickering with the Voters List for municipal elections. Once
received from MPAC, the City will make the list available for public
inspection, and modify the list as required to ensure accuracy.
The preliminary Voters List showing
the names of all persons entitled to vote in the October 25, 2010

What if I am not able to attend the voting
location?
A person who is not able to attend the voting
location on either of the advance voting days or on Voting Day may
appoint another person as a voting proxy to vote on their behalf.
The following rules apply:

The person acting as a proxy must also be an
eligible elector in the City of Pickering
-
No person shall appoint more than one voting
proxy and no person can act as a proxy for more than one person
unless the relationship between the proxy and the persons for
whom they are voting are their spouse, same-sex partner, a
sibling, parent, child, grandparent or grandchild
-
Proxies can only be appointed after the time
for withdrawal of nominations has expired for all offices for
which the election is being conducted. The earliest day for
appointment is September 10, 2010

To appoint your voting proxy, you must
complete the prescribed form, which will be available on the
City's website or at the Clerk's Office, after September 13,
2010

The person appointed as proxy must attend the
Clerk's Office, Second Floor, Civic Complex, One The Esplanade,

voting location designated for the elector for whom they are
