Play in the Past
Do you recognize these chants?
Auntie, Auntie over the shanty! Ollie Ollie oxen free! Ink, ink,
a bottle of ink, the cork fell out and you stink! So many of the
games and rhymes we, our parents, and our grandparents sang and
played are disappearing, replaced by Wii, X-Box, DS, battery
operated toys, and television. Kids in the Village Heritage
Games and Crafts program is designed to bring good old-fashioned
outdoor play back into the lives of children.
Join the staff at Pickering
Museum Village each Thursday morning at 10:00 am this summer for
a fun selection of games followed by a hands-on crafting
activity. Each week will include a new arrangement of heritage
games lasting approximately one hour, accompanied by a
heritage-themed craft. Games will be appropriate for the
weather, and are bound to be crowd pleasers. Pioneer children
really knew how to have a good time using the things around
them, nature and simple wooden toys.
Pre-registration is not required,
but guests are reminded that the program begins promptly at
10:00 am. Groups including 6 children or more should call ahead.
Participants are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and stay after
the program for a tour of the Pickering Museum Village.
Beginning in August, craft workshops will be offered for adults
at the same time, so parents can play in the past, too. Ask
about registering for Adults in the Village workshops.
Regular admission prices apply
for adults, and program cost is $5.00 for each child
participating in the program. Pickering Museum Village is just
10 quick clicks from central Pickering on the south side of
Highway #7, between Brock Road and Westney Road. For more
information or driving directions, please call the Museum
Village at 905.683.8401, or visit
cityofpickering.com/museum .
