A Piece of Pickering's Past Comes Home

|
Do old woodworking tools and
techniques spark an interest? If so, step back into the 19th
century when most things were made of wood; your home,
furniture, your vehicle, toys, and even the tools you used
around the farm were largely made of wood.
The museum village’s newest
volunteer group, the Woodwrights' Guild, will focus its
activities on woodworking in and around the village. This would
include demonstrating the daily activities in a 19th century
wheelwright shop, the general repair and restoration of wooden
artefacts, carpentry (including the repair and restoration of
existing buildings) and the construction of new, period-compatible
structures.
One of the Guild’s challenging
projects is the building of a period log shanty, to demonstrate
what a settler’s first walled shelter was like. Another project
will be to help set up a farm workshop where PMV volunteers can
try their hand at making wooden toys and other simple items.
Future activities in the Guild’s plans include making benches
and repairing fences.
